India accounts for 2.45% of land area and 4% of water resources of the world but represents 16% of the world population. Water resource which is ideal for use in India is 1,123 Billion Cubic Meter from which 690 BCM can be used from surface and 433 BCM can be used form ground.
Irrigation sector consumes most of the water which is almost 688 BCM and according to the data sources it may increase 1072 BCM by 2050.
Due to increase in population and development activities in India, the per capita average annual freshwater availability has been reducing since 1951 from 5,177 m3 to 1869 m3, in 2001 and 1588 m3, in 2010 and expected to further reduce an extreme low value 1,140 m3 by 2050.
